For years I have posted verses from the Psalms and a brief comment on Facebook and now am turning them into a blog. It is my conviction that the Psalms, as found in the Bible, are an example for us of honest communication with God. The psalmists express a wide range of emotions, circumstances, and requests. God is not afraid of our questions, doubts, or concerns. Join me as we learn from the Psalms to process our emotions through the character of God, and see him more clearly.

Psalm 82 "What do you want to do?"

Psalm for Today = 82:3-4
"Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
Rescue the weak and the needy;
deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Comment:
Do you remember that classic scene in the original Disney movie The Jungle Book (1967) where the vultures are up in the tree trying to figure out what they wanted to do?

Why include this here? Well, in this psalm, we get the answer to what God would want us to do as leaders and influencers so we don't have to sit around like a bunch of bored birds.

The words spoken by God in this psalm are to those who sit in judgment.

These verses describe the God-ordained work of those in authority... which includes all who follow Jesus.

Why is it that so often when people have some degree of authority and power they use it to advance themselves and to keep others down? Could there be better, more systemic, evidence for the Fall of man? I doubt it.

Do we use what authority and influence that we have been given to do what it is supposed to do? Here is a list of the four things (in two pairs) that God suggests to us...
  1. Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;
  2. Maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
  3. Rescue the weak and the needy;
  4. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
